What would be good career choice for someone who excels in English?

JP asked:

I would like to be an English teacher but as a single mom of a 4 yr. old I cannot possibly support both of us and accomplish student teaching requirements. I have a flair for writing poetry but not prose, so journalism is out. Something that does not require more than a bachelor’s degree would be ideal.

Write ebooks on-line. I write them, and make decent side money from it. What’s great about this is that you can write about whatever topic you love, based on a “need” or “demand” that’s out there. For example, if you love “dogs”, look for a burning question that people have about dogs, a particular breed, a certain illness that ails dogs, or whatever you think people would love (a marketing “niche”). Then, make yourself a good web site with excellent sales copy. I’m attaching the link to a good site where they can give you tips on how to do sales copy – - Your Sales Copy MUST be quality or you won’t sell anything. Just be careful not to get caught up in what YOU love so much as what the general public would like to read…Otherwise you won’t make money. The start-up cost for something like this is about $400 – $600 depending upon what web host you get, which marketing/sales help books you buy or download, etc… A good FTP (file transfer protocol) program for when you design your web site would be something like “Bullet Proof”, which is what I use. Anyway, I love what I do. I don’t make a load of money doing it…I still have a traditional pt-time job…But boy do I love writing my own stuff!

Have you considered working as a marketing assistant or advertising copy editor? I’m an English major and I’ve worked as a marketing assistant, newsletter editor, and most recently as a Webmaster and Web Developer. You might also consider working as a free-lance blogger. Companies pay bloggers to write about topics relevant to company products.
