Should I give up on my career choice?
smiley asked:
I have wanted to be a photo journalist(taking pictures and writing articles for newspapers or magazines) for a couple of years now and i don’t want to change my mind. But the problem is, journalism is a dying art. Not many people read newspapers anymore and I’m afraid that in the future newspapers and magazines will discontinue publication and i’ll have no choice but to change my career altogether. I can’t picture myself doing anything but this and i don’t know what to do. Please help?

You could try looking into internships or jobs available in your area and see if you could get one of those to try and start your career. If you can’t find any, and are unable to relocate, you could see if there are any volunteer opportunities for non profits who want to publish more information about their business. This wouldn’t pay, but would give you some experience and may lead to a job offer from another corporation. You could offer to write a pamphlet for them.
Another option would be to ask around your neighbourhood and find out what people are interested in reading, then try making your own newspaper and distributing it for free (at first) to neighbours to see what they think. If they enjoy your writing style, maybe you could start your own business.

Print media may be dying, but journalism certainly is not. Journalists today are now more likely to work for Television or Internet outlets. (Just last month, the Seattle Post went to a strictly online format.)
You don’t say what stage of your education you are at, but I would suggest doing an Internship with a news organization. This will help you learn more about where the field is headed.
