Is the graphic design field a good career choice?

I’m in my first year of college and I’m going for graphic design. I’ve heard a lot of negatives about this field and I want to hear from people who are experienced in this to give me advice. I’ve always been passionate about art ever since I was little. My parents didn’t agree with the art path at first and suggested medical, but I couldn’t do something I won’t enjoy for the rest of my life. I’m just hoping this career is really all that great. Any tips or advice would be nice. =]

i think its like anything you do, if you are good and passionate about it you will succeed. it is also true that many people are getting into this field, because it appeals to younger people and its quite cheap to get setup these days. people are also paying less and less it seems for design, so you need to be very creative and good at selling yourself in an interview or to your clients!
