Is marine archaeology a good career choice?

Jason asked:

I am getting a Ph.D in archaeology and I was wondering if marine archaeology would be a good career choice?

Is it an area that is already over populated with people?

There aren’t as many marine archaeologist as land based archaeologists, however, it’s still difficult to find a good job. The jobs are out there though! it just might take some time to find one that you can make a career from. Try and make good contacts through your professors and other professionals in your field and an opportunity will pop up.

More than anything else, it’s important that it’s something you love, because if you love your job, it shows and more jobs become available simply from the passion you exhibit. It’s better to have a low paying job that you love than a high paying job that you’d rather slit your wrists than go to everyday.

    Good luck deciding!

The above advice is spot on!

Become a very good “networker”; people hire people they already know and trust can do the work before they think of hiring people they don’t know.

If you love archeology and are fascinated by humanity’s interaction with the rivers and oceans, then this might be the career for you.

If any of the professors at your university specialize in marine archeology, you would do well to speak with them. If not, be prepared to post-doc at another location prior to job hunting.

Knowledge of water craft history and the ability to dive would be pluses. It is a good idea to have some appropriate field work on your curriculum vitea as well.

It is not a matter of too many people for the number of jobs in the area. Most do not take the time to properly prepare for the jobs that are being offered.
