Is Graphic Design a good career choice?

Spades asked:

I’ve heard the market is flooded with designers these days and it is very competitive finding a job in an actual studio and doing freelance work for peanuts and without benefits. If you are currently a designer how did you break into the biz and get your first real job. Do you regret choosing this career path?

There is no money in it, and yes, they are a dime a dozen anymore. Choose a career path that doesn’t go out of style like something in the medical field.

Im going to be a soph majoring in Graphic Design. I have been doing work for small companies just to get my name out in the world. If I keep it up, I don’t doubt I will have some sort of job. And if its not the best money making thing in the world – who cares? I love what I’m doing and I can work at home!!!! You can always start your own business too. Thats my plan. =)

i’m currently in college with graphic design as my major
i’m loving it so far and i hear that there is a large demand for graphic artists as technology advances
i dont think it is going to be too difficult for me to find a job straight out of college, but that is through the help of internships and a very good education in the field
it is a wonderful field though, its very fun to let the creative juices flow and get paid for it.
if you choose graphic arts, good luck!

It can be a good job career. The good thing about a graphic designer is that it’s flexible job, and every now and then, companies would look for new and talented graphic artists; so, don’t be disheartened if the competition is high. I don’t think that it’s that high though. Just be confident with yourself and keep sending your resume. Believe in your talent, be patient, and accept rejection as part of finding a job. Learn all the computer programs used for graphic designing, and beef up your portfolio. If you’re a fresh grad, or you’re starting your career as a graphic artist, it can take time to get a job, depending on the company. It can take months, weeks, or days, if you’re lucky. I had friends who were called by a magazine company after two months; some, after three. Some applied for advertising agencies and were requested for an interview months after as well.

After I graduated college, I was called by a certain advertising agency after a month. I didn’t get hired, lol, because my knowledge in computer design programs were limited, and because of the fact that my passion is not about computers, but in another field of art; so, I stopped learning other programs. If I pursued advertising or graphic designing, I guess I’d be okay, but I would be a little disappointed because it wasn’t passion. You still got a lot of time, don’t pressure yourself too much. If there’s a will, there’s a way.

It’s a very good career choice. True, it’s a competitive industry, but there is plenty of work to go around. In the beginning, in any field, you always have to pay your dues.

Instead of looking for a job that suits you, find a company that suits you. Somewhere you like the culture, somewhere with opportunity for growth. Always stay on top of industry trend, because most artists don’t take the time to. If you’re the one applicant who asks if the company practices green design, you will stand out.

Once you’re working, know about the positions surrounding yours. Learn anything anyone will teach you – be versatile. For example, say you’re working as a production artist and you are able to learn about the pre-press process. When you apply for your next job, if you’re the one applicant with pre-press knowledge, you will stand out.

My first job was for a local newspaper. Today I own a creative services company. Stay ahead of the curve and you’ll be successful. Email me with questions anytime.

You’re right on, my man. It is very competitive, and the market is oversaturated with “designers.” Just remember there are designers and there are people who have a copy of Photoshop. Not exactly the same thing. If you do get into it, be a thoughtful, disciplined designer, and you will go far. Get all of the fundamentals down because design is not about the latest software.

For anyone who thinks there isn’t much competition, check out how many companies are advertising on my blog alone:

And those are just the ones who are buying advertising. Look at craigslist and freelance designers.com. 10 times as much.

In any case, best of luck to you.
