Is becoming a pharmacist a good career choice?

Blackb3lt asked:

It’s the avenue of study and career I plan on pursuing, after my wife finishes her degree. Any pharmacists out there like there jobs, or wish they would have done something different? Is the pay good and worth the at least 6 years of school?

Choice of career is entirely up to you is it worth it? also up to you … will it make you happy will you look forward to working everyday? or Will it be a drag. Personally i think that whatever you do in life is worth it if you enjoy your job and you make a difference in someone else life. I would think that as a Pharmacist it would be quite fulfilling knowing that people who are sick are depending on you to help them fee3l better and be well…

Being a pharmacist is an excellent career choice. The pay is great, and if you’re not working in a hospital pharmacy, you no longer have to compound solutions and ointments, like in the old days, everything comes pre-mixed or pre-packaged. All you havce to do is to dispense it.Nowadays, you even have pharmacy technicians to help you. Definately worth the years of education to get there.

yeah, pay is good and i like the job. im in pharmacy school right now though, so im not a pharmacist quite yet. pay is very good, average graduate from my school made about 85k their first year out, nationwide average salary for pharmacists is in the mid 90s i think. there is a shortage right now so its really easy to find a job and the salaries are high, but i dont know if that will last forever. there are a lot of threats like robots, mail order, etc. that will reduce the amount of pharmacists needed. people say that wont matter though because the volume of prescriptions filled is rising fast with aging babyboomers, but i dont think it will be quite as rosey in 10 years as it is now. but everyone else thinks im crazy so i guess dont listen to me. they say the profession is moving away from dispensing to a more clinical setting of doing stuff like managing people’s blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, etc. but i dont know if that will actually happen or not. but yeah, its a good job and go for it if its something you want to do. if you wanna try it, apply to some local pharmacies and see if you can get a job as a technician and get some hands on experience.

i guess you can msg me if you want if you have other questions.

oh, and to the person above that said they make as much as a doctor- not even close. like i said, pharmacists make a little under 100k a year, family doctors usually make anywhere from 100-200k a year pending on their practice, and surgeons and specialists make 200-500k a year.
