Is a black suit a must for job interviews?
Santa C asked:
I ask because at job interviews I’ve seen, everyone interviewing wears a black suit. Even though ppl at the firm wear a variety of colors (navy blue, charcoal, gray, etc.).

Its not mandatory but it shows good character if you show up in at least semi formal clothes.

navy and charcoal are better interview suits. black is the domain of funerals, state events and MIBs.

Being conservative is the key.
Dark blue, or grey are probably even better than black.

Unless you plan on interviewing a funeral home, a resounding NO!
Black is too intimidating and too much like you are headed to a funeral; says to the person you are interviewing that you are very somber and unless the position craves somberness, like working a funeral home, Small Claims Court Clerk, or collections at a bank, it is WAY to harsh and abrupt. It is likely the candidates you see don’t make the final cut.
The safest and best color for an interview suit is Navy with a white shirt or blouse (depending on your sex) and matching Navy shoes, or if you don’t have or can’t find black shoes, but NEVER brown.

The most appropriate interview suits are navy. A conservative grey is also appropriate. With a navy suit, cordovan (burgundy) shoes are the traditional standard, although black are also acceptable. I have never seen someone attempt to match navy shoes with a navy suit in recent years, and wouldn’t recommend this approach. With the grey/charcoal suit, stick to black shoes. With both, a white or blue shirt and conservative tie will present the best impression. And, of course, make sure to match your belt and your shoes.
Black, as others have mentioned, is really more for mourning during the day…or for formal social events. It is not an appropriate interview suit despite its popularity among candidates who don’t know any better.

No, not at all. I wore a black and palomino (a yellowy beige) coat and dress set. And they were really interested in me. The outfit was very tasteful.
You can wear navy blue, charcoal gray, as you mentioned during the interview too. Also try brown, beige. I’ve worn a deep wedgewood blue (like a gray blue) also.
